Buddha’s Performance of Miracles Day
This Saturday is Buddha’s Miracle Day (Chotrul Duchen), which is one of the four major holy days of the Tibetan Buddhist calendar. It commemorates the fortnight of miraculous manifestations that the Buddha displayed in response to repeated challenges to prove his spiritual attainments, and the awe and faith that those miracles inspired in those who beheld them. On this day, the merit of virtuous activities is multiplied many times.
On holy days such as this, it is traditional to take one-day, sojong, vows to accumulate merit and purify negative karma. The sojong vows are a simplified version of monastic vows, and include commitments to abstain from music, food after midday, and sexual activity for one day. For those who can stay, we will perform auspicious prayers following the sojong ritual.
